At the heart of the collection’s prints lie the whimsical scribbles of crayon and gouache, a celebration of unrestrained creativity. These playful patterns are a tribute to the unfiltered joy of childhood, where every stroke is an expression of pure imagination.
Interwoven with these vibrant designs are subtle nods to the historical tiles of Singapore, particularly the exquisite Peranakan tiles that reflect Singapore’s rich cultural heritage. Inspired by their vivid colours and intricate patterns, we sought to capture the essence of this artistry throughout our collection. Our exploration led us to the Peranakan Museum of Singapore, where we immersed ourselves in the beauty of these cultural artifacts, gaining insight into the craftsmanship and symbolism behind each design.
The influence of these stunning patterns can be seen not only in the garments but also in the lapels and belts of the collection, where they serve as a tribute to the vibrant stories and traditions these tiles represent. Each piece becomes a tapestry of stories, colours, and textures, a reflection of both past and present.
In “The Spaces Between”, we delve into the essence of Ma (間), appreciating how negative space—the gaps between forms—holds equal significance to the forms themselves. Ma (間) is captured through intentional design choices, creating garments that breathe and move with the wearer. Strategic placements of pleats, darts, and gathers juxtapose structure with flowing silhouettes, enhancing the overall design while creating dynamic interactions with the prints.
The thoughtful arrangement of these elements allows the vibrant patterns to flow seamlessly across the fabric, drawing attention to both the filled and unfilled areas. As pleats and gathers add texture and shape, they frame the prints and guide the eye, enriching the design with depth. This interplay not only highlights the beauty of the patterns but also accentuates the surrounding negative space, inviting contemplation and engagement.
By emphasizing these empty spaces, I aim to convey a sense of openness and possibility. These gaps are not mere voids; they serve as intentional pauses that encourage the wearer to reflect and breathe, mirroring moments in life that inspire deeper thought. The strategic positioning of prints alongside structural elements transforms these spaces into a canvas for expression and storytelling.
